In their Words…….
Frustrated by the pressures on Aberdeen’s public courses and the lengthy waiting lists for membership of private clubs, Charlie Keith, a community policeman working in Aberdeen had a dream – this was to build his own golf course. The first moves were made in 1979 when a meeting was called in the local village hall to establish support for the formation of a local golf club. A steering Committee was formed and within a month a local farmer offered them a farm. Plans were drawn up by the Alliss/Thomas consortium.
A planning application was made to Gordon District Council but was turned down, the reason being there was not an “overwhelming need” for a golf course on this site and so the release of the land from food production could not be justified. Three other potential sites in the area were identified, two of which proved inappropriate. The third was Swailend farm, two miles south of Newmachar village the owner was approached and he agreed to sell.
Newmachar is home to two 18 hole golf courses as well as a spacious driving range and a short-game practice area. Newmachar Golf Club is located on the outskirts of Aberdeen, only five miles from the international airport and the village of Dyce.
The Hawkshill course par 72, SSS 74, was designed by Dave Thomas and opened for play in 1990. The course has been endorsed by Peter Alliss, and is regarded as one of the toughest tests of golf in the area. It has already hosted major championships, including the Scottish Professional Championship and the Scottish Seniors Open.
The Swailend course, par 72, SSS 71, was also designed by Dave Thomas and opened for play in 1997. Slightly less demanding than the Hawkshill course, it is nevertheless an excellent test for golfers of all standards.
Our clubhouse provides panoramic views over the Hawkshill course and fully licensed with a full catering service provided. You should always book catering for parties of eight or more in advance, as restricted opening hours may be in operation, especially during the winter months.Newmachar Golf Club
